THE ORIGIN ARCHIVE
Whence
A documented history of what frightened people, and why it took that shape. The codex records the shape; this records the people who met it — the year, the village, the pressure they were under, and the vocabulary that happened to be available when they reached for a name.
The stance
Nothing here is invented and nothing here is dismissed. What a person underwent is never in dispute; only the explanation is dated — including the one we are standing on, which is why every record states what our own account does not yet reach.
2 records
The weight on the chest
Roughly one person in thirteen has woken unable to move, with a weight on the chest and someone in the room. The experience has been recorded continuously for twenty-four centuries. Only the name has changed — and the name has always come from whatever was available.
The new machine is a demon
For roughly six centuries, every technology that produces speech, image or presence without a visible human source has been read first as an opening to something else. Printing, the telegraph, the telephone, radio, television, games, and now generative systems. Each reading was sincere. Each receded as the technology became domestic.
Seven lamps
Each link in a record’s descent chain carries the light of its era. Move through a chain and the room is relit — tallow to gaslight to silver to ink-red to amber to phosphor to the flat blue-white of the feed, whose texture is that it has none.
